Description Letters mainly from John Sanders "Jack" Cayzer to his parents 1885-87 from schools Cargilfield and Rugby, then 1893-1907 covering his military career, gambling debts, marriage to Sibyl Hall, transfer to a new regiment, participation in the Second Boer War, Sibyl's conduct during the Boer War, Jack's post-war ill-health, convalescence in New Zealand and Switzerland, divorce from Sibyl, convalescence in New Zealand, Norway, Canada and North America. Jack's debts are a constant theme of the letters. His final letter looks forward to his return to England in October 1907. Jack Cayzer suffered from a tubercular ailment which he was believed to have contracted during the Boer War. He died on 14th January 1908.
The bundle includes two letters from Sibyl Cayzer nee Hall to Sir Charles Cayzer, (one prior to marriage), invitation to the wedding of Sibyl and Jack, addressed to Sir Charles and Lady Cayzer (Sir Charles did not approve of the match and did not attend the wedding), press cuttings and other ephemera re Jack's military career, a cutting re Cayzer vs Cayzer (the divorce), a letter from Harold Cayzer to his father regarding Jack's post-divorce state of health and future prospects in the army, a single letter of condolence on the death of Jack Cayzer, and some verses written on his death by a Gartmore local.
The bundle also includes a printed copy of "Signalling in conjunction with The Conveyance of Orders in Action by Bt.-Major J.T. [sic] Cayzer, p.s.c., 7th (Princess Royal's) Dragoon Guards. (Late Director of Signalling, Natal Field Force) 1904". This pamphlet contains Jack's speech and discussion from the floor, at a meeting of the Military Society of Ireland.
